What is Panchkarma?

Panchkarma is the most comprehensive procedure of Ayurveda that aims to balance the different doshas of our body and remove all the toxins. It is the stepping stone to all Ayurvedic treatments. It is used for prevention as well as cure of various diseases. Panchkarma has been scripted in our ancient Vedas as a healing and rejuvenating technique used for royals as well as the common man.

What are the different types of Panchkarma?

As the name suggests, "Panchkarma" is a culmination of five procedures - Vamana, Virechna, Nasya, Basti, and Raktamokshana. Each of these procedures is based on the principle of intense detoxification and balancing the three doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Based on the specific problems of an individual, any one or more of these procedures are recommended by the Panchkarma expert.

Vamana -

This Panchkarma procedure is based on therapeutic emesis. In this treatment, ayurvedic medicines are given through oleation and fomentation for a few days to melt the toxins and help them get accumulated in the upper cavities of the body, after which vomiting is induced therapeutically to expel out the toxins from the body tissues. It helps detoxify the upper gastro portion of our body. Vamana is chiefly used for Kapha-related ailments like asthma, cough and cold, hyperacidity, weight gain, etc.

Virechna -

Virechna procedure aims at cleansing the lower gastro part of our body. It is a medicated purgation therapy where toxins are eliminated through the bowels. After oleation and fomentation processes, herbal laxatives are given to cleanse the bowels of all the toxins. Virechna procedure is especially useful for pitta-related conditions such as colitis, herpes zoster, jaundice, etc.

Nasya -

Nasya therapy is meant for cleansing the complete head area. In this therapy, medicinal oils and herbal medications are instilled through the nasal route after fomentation of neck and shoulder area. This therapy removes the toxins from head and neck area and is very beneficial for diseases like migraine, headaches, hair problems, sinusitis, sleep disorders and respiratory ailments.

Basti -

Basti treatment cleanses the lower part of the gastrointestinal tract from the transverse colon to the anus by using a therapeutic decoction enema. It is very effective against Vata-dominated and chronic illnesses like constipation, piles, and arthritis.

Raktamokshana -

Raktamokshana treatment is used to clean the blood. Toxin buildup in the bloodstream is the main cause of several diseases and raktamokshana comes to rescue in such ailments by the careful controlled removal of small quantities of impure blood. It is especially useful in skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis, pigmentation, liver and spleen disorders, gout, etc.
